We’re Rethinking American Mahjong.

EASTA began with a simple question:

What could American Mahjong look like today?

American Mahjong has a rich history, a distinctive rhythm, and a deeply social character. It brings people together around a table, game after game, generation after generation.

But when we looked at the sets available today, we kept seeing the same visual language repeated.

We wondered what would happen if we approached American Mahjong differently—not by changing what makes the game special, but by reconsidering the object that brings people to the table.

That question became EASTA.

A Modern American Mahjong Brand

EASTA creates contemporary American Mahjong sets designed around the way the game is played today.

We believe a Mahjong set can be more than a collection of tiles and accessories. It can be something you want to leave on the table. Something that feels considered in your hands, looks at home in your space, and becomes part of the moments shared around it.

Our approach is simple:

Modern. Eastern. Precise. Collectible.

We draw from the visual heritage of Mahjong without trying to recreate it literally.

Instead, we look for a balance between recognition and reinvention—familiar symbols, simplified forms, considered proportions, restrained color, and a visual system that feels contemporary without losing the identity of the game.

Designing the Tile

The tile is where everything begins.

We spent much of the development process looking at the smallest details: the proportion of the tile, the scale of a character, the relationship between numbers and symbols, the balance of positive and negative space, and how a mark feels when repeated across an entire set.

Some ideas worked.

Many did not.

We explored different interpretations of traditional Mahjong characters and symbols, modern geometric systems, typography, color, ornament, and abstraction. We repeatedly returned to the same principles:

The tiles should be easy to recognize.
The design should feel effortless.
Nothing should be decorative simply for the sake of decoration.

The result is a visual language built specifically for contemporary American Mahjong.

Material Matters

We chose acrylic for EASTA because material is part of the experience.

Clarity, weight, light, color, and touch all contribute to the character of a Mahjong set. Rather than hiding the material behind unnecessary ornament, EASTA uses the qualities of acrylic as part of the design.

The standard EASTA tile is 36 × 25 mm, giving the set a precise, consistent physical proportion while providing enough presence for the tile-face graphics to remain clear and comfortable during play.

EASTA 001

The first expression of this approach is EASTA 001.

It is our first American Mahjong collection—and the result of everything we learned while asking what a modern Mahjong set could be.

EASTA 001 contains 160 acrylic tiles:

  • 152 standard American Mahjong tiles
  • 2 additional Joker tiles
  • 6 blank tiles

But the number is only part of the story.

The real goal was to create a complete object: a set in which the tile faces, proportions, material, visual system, and physical experience feel like they belong together.

Not traditional Mahjong redesigned for the sake of looking different.

Not a novelty object that happens to be playable.

A contemporary American Mahjong set, designed from the ground up.

More Than a Game

Mahjong is ultimately about people.

The tiles create the structure, but the experience happens around the table: the conversation, the anticipation, the small decisions, the laughter, the rituals, and the relationships that develop over countless games.

That is why we don’t see design as something separate from play.

A beautiful tile should still be a good tile to play with.

A modern set should still feel unmistakably like Mahjong.

And an object designed for the table should invite people to sit down and stay awhile.

What Comes Next

EASTA started with American Mahjong, but the larger idea is about how familiar objects can be reconsidered for the way we live today.

We want to explore that space carefully—through materials, typography, symbols, color, proportion, and the details that make an everyday object feel unexpectedly special.

EASTA 001 is the beginning.

We’re here to rethink American Mahjong—one tile at a time.
